Berea gets $729,000 for sewer infrastructure improvements

BEREA, Ohio — The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) has awarded Berea $729,284 for use in improving its sewer system.

The funding is part of the 2025 Member Community Infrastructure Program (MCIP).

The grant will cover design and construction costs for improvements along Jacqueline Drive, Meadow Drive, Sprague Road and “a handful of side streets,” according to Director of Public Works/City Engineer Tony Armagno.

He noted that any construction would occur in 2025.

“We’ve had some flooding concerns, but nothing too significant,” Armagno explained in an interview.

“The sewer district also identified this area as one where we’re having I and I (i.e. inflow and infiltration), which is storm water getting into the sanitary sewer.

“We also have a pump station that was put on Fair Street years ago to try to help with flooding, and with the improvements we’ve done on Fair Street, we’ve greatly reduced the flooding over there.

“We want to see now if we can eliminate that pump station.”

That decision will be made after flow monitoring, sewer pipe televising and engineering testing are done.

“We are not 100 percent sure we can eliminate that pump station, but after we line the sewers, then we believe we may be able to do that,” Armagno said.

“We will make some improvements, test again and then see what we can do.”
