With just a few days before the NFL trade deadline, we are due for some surprises to take place. One of which may come in the form of the Cincinnati Bengals looking around for help at the deadline.
According to NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Cincinnati is looking to bring in some defensive help to save their season. The Bengals aren’t normally players at the deadline so this is certainly a shock.
“The team that has only acquired two players via trade in 52 years is looking to do some shopping. This isn’t the Bengals’ style, but they have strong belief in this team and intend to get back to, at least, the AFC Championship game. Despite sitting at 3-5, Cincinnati has been poking around in search of a cornerback and a defensive lineman to get defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo some help.”
Cincinnati hasn’t gotten off to a good start this year, sitting with a record of 3-5. But the Bengals have faith in their roster if they were to reach the postseason.
With star quarterback Joe Burrow under center, Cincinnati believes that they can go on a run if they can just get into the playoffs. They’ve shown flashes this year of being a strong team but haven’t been able to consistently put it all together.
The defense has been a real problem but it seems that Cincinnati may be looking to correct things. Russini mentions New York Giants edge rusher Azeez Ojulari as an option for the Bengals
“It’s known around the league that the New York Giants, sitting in last place in the NFC East, are shopping young edge rusher Azeez Ojulari. Teams that are keeping an eye on the 24-year-old include the Falcons, Cardinals and Bengals.”
Landing a young player like Ojulari could give the Bengals’ defense a jolt. In the year, he has registered 24 total tackles and six sacks.
The Bengals don’t have many good options on the roster who can get to the quarterback other than Trey Hendrickson. Adding someone like Ojulari could do wonders for this defense and help defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo out tremendously.
It remains to be seen if the Bengals will actually make any trade additions as history has shown us that they likely won’t. But with Burrow leading the way, maybe Cincinnati will change up how they’ve done things in the past.
