Belfast bakery quietly closes after a decade in business

Must read

A small bakery in downtown Belfast appears to have quietly closed at some point in the last year.

Moonbat City Baking Co., which opened in 2013 at 137 Main St., was known for its well-made croissants and typically only opened for a couple of days each week. It’s one of many restaurants and food service businesses that have closed across Maine in the last year, amid business challenges that have included inflation and staffing shortages.

The sign for the bakery has been removed from the side of the brick building, its phone number has been disconnected and its website no longer takes orders. Its listing on Google also indicates that it’s permanently closed.

Michelle Berry, the owner and chef of Moonbat City Baking, didn’t respond to requests for comment. Neither did the owner of its building.

It’s not clear when exactly the bakery closed. Its last online reviews were made about a year ago. It was generally well-regarded on restaurant review websites.

“The cinnamon twists were heaven on earth,” wrote one customer on the website Yelp, where the bakery’s profile also says that it’s closed. That profile was last updated in October.
