More than £10m has been put aside to improve a major retail and leisure development in Barnsley as well as a busy town centre roundabout, said a council.
The money will be used to “enhance” public spaces at the Glass Works centre, improve fire safety and attract new commercial tenants.
Traffic flow in the area will also be improved as part of the project, with works planned for the Alhambra roundabout – where the entrance to Glass Works parking is.
Councillor Robert Frost said this would alleviate congestion and make the area more attractive to shoppers, workers and visitors.
Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council also said the one of the most “pressing” upgrades was replacing fire doors in the Glass Works Market to meet modern safety standards.
The funding will also be used for “essential” work on the Glass Works bridge and surrounding areas.
Frost said: “As part of our commitment to maintaining the Glass Works, money was set aside for a life cycle replacement programme of planned essential maintenance and repair works.
“These include necessary maintenance and repairs in the Market, such as replacing doors as well as improvements.”
Other allocations in the local authority’s capital project budget include £18m for the Health on the High Street project in the Alhambra Centre and £6.5m for projects that promote walking and cycling across the borough, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Frost added: “The budget for this maintenance is funded from the income generated by the tenants of the Glass Works and was approved by the cabinet in 2023.
“The works were completed in 2024.”
