While Augusta is still cleaning up from Hurricane Helene, the city is under a bright spotlight ahead of Thanksgiving.

U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the 150 ‘Best Places to Live in the U.S.’ and Augusta was one of three cities that made the list, ranking No. 85.

Cities in the rankings are evaluated using data from sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, the U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. News’ own internal resources.

The data was categorized into various indexes (health care, affordability, happiness, etc.) and evaluated using a methodology determined by Americans’ preferences. The percent weighting for each index follows the answers from a February 2024 public survey in which people from across the country voted for what they believed was the most important factor to consider when choosing where to live.

Augusta scored 6.2 out of 10 overall. Quality of life was 6.5 and value scored 7.3. Here’s what U.S. news had to say about it:

“Most out-of-towners recognize Augusta as the home of the Masters golf tournament, but those who live here know there’s much more to the area than fairways and sand traps. Founded in the early 1700s along the Savannah River, Augusta played a crucial role in the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Augusta even spent a decade as the state capital in the late 18th century, and more recently, Augusta was the childhood home of James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul.” But the metro area isn’t stuck in the past. Today, Augusta is home to a thriving culinary scene, and residents show a deep appreciation for the arts and the outdoors. Augusta is also becoming a destination for retirees who want warm weather and a low cost of living.”

Augusta also ranked No. 50 in their related ‘Best Places to Retire’ list. Meanwhile, Atlanta ranked No. 30 and Savannah ranked No. 106 in the ‘Best Places to Live’ list and No. 61 and No. 107 (respectively) in the ‘Best Places to Retire’ list.

Here are cities that ranked as the very best to live:

  1. Namples, FL
  2. Boise, ID
  3. Colorado Springs, CO
  4. Greenville, SC
  5. Charlotte, NC
  6. Raleigh, NC
  7. Huntsville, AL
  8. Virginia Beach, VA
  9. Austin, TX
  10. Boulder, CO
