Asheville water system ‘severely damaged’ by Helene; repairs underway

A preliminary assessment on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 28 showed that Hurricane Helene severely damaged the City of Asheville’s water system, the City of Asheville said in a release.

Extensive repairs to the water system will be required and the City of Asheville’s Water Resources Department is already starting the procurement process for needed equipment and personnel.

Christy Edwards, spokesperson for the City of Asheville, gave an update on the restoration of service:

Helene was a generational weather event. Although providing an accurate timeline is impossible, service restoration will be an extended effort. We are grateful for your patience while we dedicate every possible resource to reconstructing the damaged portions of our water system.

The City of Asheville advises anyone who currently has water to fill bathtubs and other containers to prepare for loss of service. However, a boil water advisory still remains in effect.
