Google is toying with a new setting that would allow users to swap Android’s double-tap power button shortcut that currently opens the camera to instead open Google Wallet and other wallet apps, and it could debut in Android 16.
The double-tap gesture for the power button has existed on Android for years as a quick and convenient way to open the camera. However, over on iPhone, Apple uses this same shortcut to open the Wallet app. While many find the camera shortcut more useful, Google seems to be preparing the ability to make the choice for yourself.
Present but disabled by default in the first Android 16 Beta, a new “Double tap power button” menu in the “Gestures” section of the Settings menu. This page allows users to swap the double-tap gesture’s functionality between opening the camera app and opening the default wallet app which, for most users, will be Google Wallet. Users can also turn off the gesture entirely if they wish.
As it stands today, Android allows users to turn off the double-tap gesture, but it can only open the camera app.
We enabled this feature in the first Android 16 Beta, but it’s also apparently present in Android 15’s latest QPR2 Beta 3 release as spotted by Android Authority. Seeing as the feature isn’t live by default in QPR2, though, it seems reasonable to expect this to debut in Android 16 instead.
