ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Georgia already hosts more than 50 major data centers for global companies — and soon, more will be added to that list.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on Tuesday that it will invest $11 billion in Douglas and Butts counties to increase cloud and AI computing infrastructure. The expansion is expected to create at least 550 new jobs.
AWS is a subsidiary of Amazon that offers a host of cloud computing web services, including storage, processing and networking.
“State and local leaders have cultivated an environment that enables companies like AWS to make bold, forward-looking investments,” AWS Vice President of Economic Development Roger Wehner said. “We are excited to deepen our partnership with the state of Georgia and contribute to the continued advancement of its thriving technology landscape.”
Since 2010, Amazon has invested $18.5 billion in Georgia and contributed more than $20 billion to its gross domestic product, the company said. Currently, Amazon employs more than 34,000 people in the state.
Romona Jackson Jones, chairwoman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, described the new investment as “historic.”
“This initial investment from AWS to expand its infrastructure here and support artificial intelligence technologies is a game-changer, and will result in our community being on the forefront of innovation, further establishing our state as a leader in technology, innovation, and artificial intelligence, which will empower businesses here and worldwide,” she said.
Data centers have flocked to Georgia for a number of reasons — especially its business tax incentives. In 2024, Area Development Magazine dubbed it the No. 1 state to do business for the 11th year in a row.
