TWC Youth Robotics Grants encourage high school students to pursue careers in STEM

AUSTIN – Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) awarded $1.4 million in grants for Youth Robotics programs that will enable more than 8,200 Texas high school students to participate in Youth Robotics competitions. This year, two applicants received grant awards — Robotics Education and Competition Foundation, Inc. and FIRST in Texas.

“The Texas Workforce Commission offers a number of programs designed to prepare the Texas workforce for high-demand occupations,” said TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel in a news release. “We are helping to pave the way for the next generation of Texans to find success in the Texas economy.”

The Youth Robotics Initiative encourages interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by expanding participation in robotics programs for high school students, developing new teams for robotics education competitions, and supporting existing competitive teams. Additionally, this program removes barriers to participation for students from schools in underserved urban and rural communities. Each grantee also has teams comprised of students with disabilities.

“By supporting youth robotics, we’re not just investing in education, we’re investing in the leaders of tomorrow,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III. “This program will equip our students with the skills needed for successful careers in STEM.”

Love’s donates $378,000 to local schools for 60th anniversary

OKLAHOMA CITY – Love’s roots can be traced back to 1964 and a single country store in Watonga, Oklahoma. That year, Late Founder Tom Love and his wife Judy Love embraced confidence, ambition and innovation to open a single country store that served residents and the travelling public. That vision has now grown to nearly 650 travel stops and country stores nationwide.

As a nod to these roots and its 60th anniversary, Love’s is committed to donating $6,000 to schools or school districts in each of the 63 cities it operates country stores. This initiative spans five states and totals $378,000. Local leaders and store team members in Oklahoma, Kansas, Utah, Colorado and Arizona selected the local school/district recipients.

“On behalf of El Reno Public Schools and El Reno High School, thank you for considering us and donating to us as it will go a long way to help us have a great, successful school year,” said Tim Pounds, Oklahoma’s El Reno High School principal. “I know our kids enjoy getting out and being able to get their snacks, gas and everything from Love’s. We really appreciate this donation and Love’s in our community.”

Golden Chick gives back with return of local school initiative

DALLAS – Golden Chick is going back to its community-focused roots with the return of its local school charity initiative. Targeting individual schools near Golden Chick restaurants, the brand will support over 230 schools within the system-wide giveback initiative. To support, it will give 50 cents from every order of its new churro menu offering now through Dec. 29.   

According to a news release, after a successful launch of the system-wide partnership in 2023, raising $190,584 for over 300 schools, the brand has decided to bring the initiative back, with a twist. Money is donated straight from sales of the churros to the schools to assist with purchasing classroom supplies, school beautification projects, class trips and everything in between.
