Alphonse G. Kwiej, 82, of Dunkirk passed away Thursday evening, September 12, 2024 at Buffalo General Hospital. Born in Dunkirk on April 29, 1942, husband of Sadie (Sam) Kwiej and son of the late Albin and Dorothy (Katta) Kwiej.
Al graduated from Dunkirk Industrial High School in 1959. Following his education, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving honorably from 1959 to 1963. During his service, he was stationed on the USS Investigator. After his military service, Al embarked on a long and fulfilling career as an assembler for Dunkirk Radiator, where he worked for an impressive 40 years.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Al cherished his time spent with family, particularly with his beloved grandchildren. He was deeply committed to being present in their lives, always making the effort to attend their scholastic and sporting events. His quick-witted personality and warm spirit created a joyful and loving environment, making lasting memories for all who knew him.
Al also found pleasure in the simple joys of life, including weekly visits to Tim Hortons on Thursdays with some of his closest friends. His love for attending softball games was another reflection of his passion for sports and community involvement.
Life memberships include the Dunkirk Lakeside Club, Moniuszko Club, First Ward Falcon Club and the Kosciuszko Club.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Sadie (Sam) Kwiej, whom he married on December 1, 1962. Children Tammy (Robert) Bankoski, Timothy (Kathy) Kwiej and Tracey Kwiej. Grandchildren Taylor, Gunnar and Quinn Bankoski, Alexis and Makayla Kwiej. Siblings James (Manja) Kwiej, Thomas Kwiej, Joan (Ken) Schnar and Steven Kwiej. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Al is preceded by his parents Albin and Dorothy (Katta) Kwiej and a sister, Maxine Petrella.
Friends and family are welcome to attend Calling Hours on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024 from 5-8 p.m. at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024 at 10 a.m. Interment in Private.
