Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google is experimenting its latest AI-only version of Search that aims to revolutionize users’ search experience. The new tool is called “AI Mode” and is available only to Google One AI Premium users for now. Google said that it is “testing” the experimental version of its new search engine, which completely removes the classic 10 blue links and instead generates an AI summary for the query.
Google Powers AI Search with Gemini 2.0
Google said that the AI Mode is powered by a custom version of its advanced Gemini 2.0 model to help users find answers to the most difficult questions, related to coding, math, and multimodal queries. Google’s VP of Product, Robby Stein said that Google’s premium users want to find more AI-generated responses for their queries, prompting Google to launch the AI Mode. The new feature can be seen on the results page of any search query.
Google One AI Premium Users can click on the tab named “AI Mode” found next to existing options such as Images and Maps to start using the tool. The Google One AI Premium feature costs $19.99 per month and provides extra cloud storage facilities and allows access to some of Google’s premium AI tools.
This testing phase will help Google gather reasonable feedback on the quality and helpfulness of the AI Mode. Currently, the model could throw traditional webpage links instead of a comprehensive AI Overview in cases where it is not fully confident of the output. Some responses could also reflect personal opinions. The tech giant will continue to improve the AI Mode with the feedback and keep updating it with new capabilities and features, including image and video responses.
Google’s AI Overviews Expands to More Users
Google had already started testing AI Overviews in the U.S. in May 2024. AI Overviews are summaries that appear on top of the search results, followed by the traditional blue links to relevant websites and sources. With the new AI Mode, users can see a more detailed AI summary with hyperlinks to referenced webpages. Additionally, users can see a search bar to ask follow-up questions instead of the 10 blue links. Google also said that it is rolling out AI Overviews to more people and even teens can now access them, without having the need to sign-in.
