If you’re not yet an Aldi shopper, there’s a chance you will become one in 2025. The supermarket chain, which just so happens to be the fastest-growing grocer in America, recently announced plans to open more than 225 new stores across the country. According to a press release, this is the largest single-year expansion in Aldi’s history, and it comes at a time when many Americans are looking to save money on groceries.
This massive expansion, which is actually part of an ambitious five-year growth strategy, will include a combination of brand-new Aldi storefronts and a plan to convert select Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores into Aldi locations. More specifically, Aldi intends to transform approximately 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys outposts in the Southeastern United States into Aldi stores through 2027.
“Converting the remaining locations to the ALDI format is critically important to our nationwide commitment to help shoppers fill their carts with quality groceries for less,” Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi, said in a statement. “As shoppers continue to feel sticker shock at the checkout, the value Aldi delivers can’t be beat.”
So, when will this grocery store switcheroo be taking place? Per the press release, grand openings for the first several converted stores are currently underway. Approximately 100 converted locations are slated to reopen as Aldi stores by the end of 2025.
Additionally, Aldi intends to open more stores in other areas of the country as well, with specific plans to expand its footprint in the Northeast and Midwest regions, and grow its presence on the West Coast. This means shoppers can expect to see, in part, more stores in Southern California and Arizona, and the first Aldi stores in communities like Las Vegas.
In 2024, Aldi opened nearly 120 stores, bringing its total store count to over 2,400. It’s currently the third-largest grocery chain by store count in the U.S., and it’s a customer favorite as well. Thanks, in part, to its affordable prices, clean stores, and array of products, Aldi is one of America’s most popular grocery stores, faring particularly well with younger consumers.
