JAMESTOWN — Jamestown earned a split in their Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League contests over the weekend.
On Sunday afternoon, the Tarp Skunks led 4-2 after four innings, but Niagara Falls scored three runs in the fifth off losing pitcher Peyton Ahlstrom (SUNY Fredonia) and tacked on one in each of the eighth and ninth frames to post a 7-4 win at Diethrick Park.
Jamestown (15-17) pounded out 12 hits, including two apiece from Bobby Stang (University of Dayton) and Aidan Wallace (University of Tampa), who also drove in two runs. Warren native Ben Berdine (Mercyhurst University) struck out three, walked two and allowed one hit in his scoreless relief appearance.
Youngsville native Nathan Lucks (Alfred State) and Shaniel Maldonado (Mercer Community College) also saw action out of the bullpen.
For the Americans (10-21), Luke Blandino (3-3) pitched seven innings, surrendering 10 hits, striking out three and walking one. Mike Helig recorded his second save of the season, pitching two scoreless innings.
Offensively, Niagara Falls was led by Jake Hollins (D’Youville) and Xavier Mann (Lenoir-Rhyne) with three hits apiece, while Michael Soares (Clark University) added two.
On Saturday evening, the Tarp Skunks built a 3-0 lead after 31/2 innings and held on for a 3-2 win over Auburn at Falcon Park.
Nine different players had a hit apiece for Jamestown in support of winning pitcher Eli Shedd (Wagner College, 1-3), who scattered four hits and struck out four in five innings. Austin Kalsek (Grand Canyon University) and Hayden Givens-Craig (University of Tampa) worked in relief, with Givens-Craig earning his third save.
For the Doubledays, Ryan Grundy (Holy Cross) had two of their seven hits.
Jamestown is off today, travels to Niagara Falls on Tuesday and will be back at Diethrick Park on Wednesday when it entertains Batavia. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.
