You have heard of Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, but have you heard of Museum Store Sunday?
Museum Store Sunday is another day to get holiday shopping done while supporting your favorite local museums.
Here’s what to know.
On the Sunday following Thanksgiving, over 2,100 museum stores internationally will be participating in this seasonal shopping day, Museum Store Sunday.
“Many items featured are created and supplied by local artisans, designers, manufacturers and other small makers,” according to Museum Store Sunday’s website. “When you make a purchase from a museum store, you are also supporting local, regional, and national businesses.”
Museum Store Sunday began in 2017 as a global advocacy campaign to showcase the value and importance of museum stores to the general public.
Museum Store Sunday will take place Dec. 1, 2024.
A museum store is more than just a gift shop in a museum, they also sell many handmade goods that align with their mission. The profits a museum store earns go directly back to the museums for their programming, exhibits, staffing, etc.
Products sold in museum stores typically reflect the mission, collections and programs of the museums and cultural institutions to which they belong. There are also unique items only available in the museum stores.
“As nonprofit retailers, museum stores further the educational mission of their institutions by offering products that allow the public to “take home” a part of the museum for their enjoyment and ongoing memory of their museum experience,” according to Museum Store Sunday’s website.
