Arkansas attorney general suing Google, YouTube

PHILLIPS COUNTY, Ark. (KAIT) – Saying that they have deliberately exploited young people and contributed to the state’s mental health crisis, Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin announced Monday he is suing Google, YouTube, and their parent company Alphabet.

The suit, filed in Phillips County Circuit Court, alleges that Google LLC, YouTube LLC, XXVI Holdings, Inc., and Alphabet, Inc. engaged in deceptive and unconscionable trade practices.

“YouTube has deceived users and parents about the safety of its platforms for youth,” Griffin said. “YouTube has profited substantially off young Arkansans because it deliberately designed its platform to be addictive by using features to keep users engaged for as long as possible.

The AG claims Alphabet’s practices violate the Arkansas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

“Google has deliberately designed and marketed YouTube to exploit and addict young users, contributing to a mental health crisis in Arkansas,” Griffin added. “The majority of children aged 13 to 17 report using YouTube every day.”
