The annualĀ U.S. News & World Report list of the best collegesĀ in the nation is out, and one Vermont school made the list, while several others were recognized among liberal arts colleges.

The publication releases its ranking of the best overall colleges every year based on several factors, including academic reputation, cost of attendance and return on investment.

The University of Vermont made the national list, tying at No. 121.

Several colleges in theĀ New England areaĀ scored high on the list, such asĀ Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyĀ andĀ Harvard University.

Best colleges in the country, per U.S. News & World Report annual ranking

Several New England area universities ranked high on this year’s list of best colleges from U.S. News & World Report. Here are theĀ top 10:

  2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  3. Harvard University
  4. Stanford University
  5. Yale University
  6. 6. California Institute of Technology (tie)
  7. 6. Duke University (tie)
  8. 6. Johns Hopkins University (tie)

Best colleges in Vermont, per U.S. News & World Report annual ranking

One Vermont colleges made U.S. News & World Report’s national list of best universities this year. The University of Vermont tied at No. 121.

However, although more Vermont schools didn’t make the national list, several were named among the best national liberal arts colleges. Here’s how they fared on that list:

114. Bennington College (tie)

Also, several Vermont schools made the list for best universities in the north region:

How U.S. News & World Report calculates ranking for best colleges list

U.S. News & World ReportĀ determinesĀ its annual best colleges list by evaluating nearly 1,500 colleges and universities using more than a dozen categories of “academic quality,” the publication said in aĀ release.

More than half of a school’s ranking is calculated based on outcome measures like graduation rates and post-graduation earning rates, according to the release.

The rest of the score is calculated using data like faculty salaries, student-to-faculty ratio and standardized test scores.
