Google has implemented new restrictions on Russian users, including limiting the creation of new accounts. According to Reuters, the Russian digital ministry confirmed on Thursday that Google has imposed these restrictions, marking the latest development in the ongoing tension between the company and the Russian government.
Reuters reports that this action follows Google’s decision in August to deactivate AdSense accounts in Russia, citing an inability to make payments to Russia-based users of its advertising service. The company had previously stopped serving ads to Russian users in March 2022, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.
The restrictions extend beyond account creation. As reported by Reuters, Russian telecom operators have noted a significant reduction in the number of SMS messages sent by Google to Russian users, potentially affecting two-factor authentication processes.
In response, the Russian digital ministry has advised users to create backup copies of their data and consider switching to alternative authentication methods or domestic platforms.
Google has faced increasing pressure from Russian authorities in recent years, particularly for not removing content deemed illegal by Moscow and for blocking YouTube channels of Russian media and public figures since the Ukraine conflict began. Reuters states that the company has blocked over 1,000 YouTube channels and more than 5.5 million videos related to the war.
Adding to the tensions, Russian lawmakers have accused Google of failing to upgrade its equipment in the country, leading to slower speeds on YouTube. However, both Google and technology experts dispute these claims, according to Reuters.
