Team NYPD wins top prize at NY Tech cooking competition

Local law enforcement officers representing the Nassau County, Suffolk County, Old Westbury, Brookville and New York City police departments gathered at NYIT de Seversky Mansion to compete in the 10th annual Cast Iron Chef Cooking Competition. Hosted in appreciation for the police departments that serve New York Tech’s Long Island and New York City campuses, the cook-off is modeled after television shows Chopped and Iron Chef.

While Team NYPD (pictured) won the competition, New York Tech made a $2,000 donation to each participating team’s charity of choice.

 

LI Heart Walk raises $600K for heart disease, stroke research

The American Heart Association held its 2024 Long Island Heart Walk at Jones Beach Field 5 in Wantagh, drawing more than 5,000 participants. Over $600,000 was raised to fund life-saving research, education and advocacy efforts to fight heart disease and stroke on Long Island.

With cardiovascular disease the leading cause of death in the U.S. and on Long Island, the American Heart Association is working to change that. Funds raised from the walk will support initiatives to improve heart health, provide local resources and advance treatments aimed at reducing the impact of heart disease and stroke in our communities.

 

Families honor loved ones at Pinelawn lantern lighting

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum welcomed over 500 families from across Long Island to its 4th Annual Lantern Lighting Celebration. The event provided a space for families to celebrate the lives of their departed loved ones in a unique and heartfelt ceremony.

To aid in the healing process, Pinelawn partnered with Paws of War, a Long Island-based nonprofit, to have therapy dogs present at the ceremony to offer support to grieving families.

Before releasing the lanterns, speakers such as Susan Capurso, a certified end-of-life doula and legacy specialist, offered words of support and guidance on navigating grief and the importance of creating lasting legacies for loved ones.

 

Pink Promises raises nearly $550K for breast cancer research

The Long Island community joined together last week for Pink Promises Casino Night in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). With approximately 400 attendees donating close to $550,000, to date, Pink Promises has raised over $8.4 million for scientists pursuing high-impact, lifesaving research across the globe.

Held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, Pink Promises Founder and BCRF Advisory Board member Stephanie Ginsberg opened the program with welcome remarks. Broadway dancer, advocate and founder of Damn Good & Co, Sarrah Strimel Bentley also shared her breast cancer journey and the many research advancements to date.
