Sports Editor Matt Daniels with a look at what’s going on around the area:

Ellie Barker and the Mahomet-Seymour volleyball team won the Charger Invitational this past Saturday at Centennial.

Three reasons we love sports today

1. Congrats to the Mahomet-Seymour volleyball team. The Bulldogs won the Charger Invitational on Saturday at Centennial, defeating St. Thomas More in the championship match after outlasting Rochester, Champaign Central and Morton in pool play.

2. Congrats to the St. Joseph-Ogden boys’ soccer team. The Spartans easily topped St. Teresa 4-0 on Saturday to win the championship match of the Bomber Classic hosted by Argenta-Oreana.

3. Congrats to the Mahomet-Seymour cross-country programs. Both the Bulldogs’ boys’ team and girls’ team placed first on Saturday at the Charleston Invitational, held on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Crowd control

Three events I’m paying attention to

1. Arcola at Tuscola volleyball. No matter the sport, the Cola Wars always brings out something special. Check it out for yourself at 7 p.m. Monday when the Warriors host the Purple Riders.

2. St. Joseph-Ogden at Fisher/Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley boys’ soccer. The Fisher Fairgrounds is the site of this small-school match at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans have won six straight, while the host Bunnies have reeled off five straight, including an impressive win against Uni High on Saturday.

3. Centennial at Champaign Central girls’ tennis. The Unit 4 rivalry will play out at Spalding Park when the Maroons host the Chargers at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Coach’s corner

Three questions with first-year Oakwood volleyball coach McKenzie Doan. Her Comets return to the court on Wednesday night when they host St. Joseph-Ogden:

1. My favorite sports team is … the United States national volleyball team.

2. Three coaches I’d like to have dinner with are … Kelly Sheffield, Mary Wise and Karch Kiraly.

3. My biggest pet peeve is … being interrupted.
