FALCONER — Heavy rain and intermittent lightning forced the suspension of Friday night’s nonleague high school football game between Randolph and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove at Bill Race Field.

The game, with the Cardinals leading 14-7 early in the second quarter, will be resumed at 2 this afternoon at the same site.

Until Mother Nature interrupted the season opener, there were plenty of highlights on both sides.

The Herd scored first, courtesy of a 27-yard pass from quarterback Jacob Roth to wide receiver Mathis Baehr, who leaped high and made a juggling catch in the corner of the end zone. Rider Carlson tacked on the extra-point kick to make it 7-0 at the 7:22 mark.

The lead didn’t last long.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton’s Nick Jacobson leaps for a pass during Friday’s nonelague football game at Veterans Memorial Park in Salamanca.

On the ensuing kickoff, Randolph’s Alexander Garland picked up the bouncing ball at about his own 20 and didn’t stop running until he reached the end zone. Griffin Nelson’s extra-point boot was good and the game was tied 7-7 with 7:08 remaining in the opening period.

On Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove’s first offensive play after Garland’s TD, the Cardinals recovered a fumble and, two plays later, Kevin McElwain, ripped off a 25-yard scoring run. Nelson’s kick was good, giving Randolph a 14-7 lead with 6:10 left in the first quarter.

That’s where the score remained until weather interrupted play early in the second period and, ultimately, forced a suspension of play.

STOPPAGE IN SALAMANCA

SALAMANCA — The dreadful weather made its way to Salamanca as the Warriors’ opener against Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton did not make it out of the opening quarter.

Time was stopped with 46 seconds left in the first quarter and the home team leading the Section VI Class C South contest 8-0 courtesy of a Xavier Peters touchdown.

The contest is set to resume at 3 p.m. today at Veterans Memorial Park in Salamanca.

Elsewhere, Cleveland Hill will make the trip back down to Ellicottville to finish its contest against Franklinville/Ellicottville and Southwestern’s game against East Aurora/Holland was rescheduled for tonight at 7.
