Business tidbits: Changes at Summitview and 16th intersection in Yakima

Must read

There’s quite a bit of business news over the past few months from just one Yakima intersection.

On the southeast corner of Summitview and 16th avenues, the West Valley Market has opened at 1512 Summitview Ave.

Located in the former 7-Eleven building, the convenience store includes snack foods, a variety of cold drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic), tobacco products and even a couple of frozen drink machines. Just don’t call them Slurpees …

Manager Jessica Magana said she eventually hopes to open a deli with fresh-made food items, and is planning for a grand opening once that occurs.

Kitty-corner from West Valley Market is the popular Fiddlesticks gift shop, at the northwest corner of Summitview and 16th.

The store, which has been open for more than 40 years, was struck by a vehicle near its main entrance this past spring. Other than a temporary two-week window in June, Fiddlesticks has been closed for repairs and remodeling.

However, new carpeting has been installed within the past week, and a permanent reopening is anticipated in the near future. Visit the Fiddlesticks Facebook page for updates.

Finally, just west of Fiddlesticks, the former Abundant Tables location has morphed into the Paper and Glass Book Bar.

The store at 1605 Summitview Ave. previously offered wine, cheese and charcuterie plates and a place to socialize, along with similarly themed gift items and gift baskets.

This summer, the business reopened as a bookstore and wine bar. Book clubs and other gatherings are hosted there; for hours and details, visit the Paper and Glass Facebook page.

HopTown Pizza closes Sunnyside location

After only eight months of operation, the downtown Sunnyside HopTown Wood-Fired Pizza location closed late last month.

Co-owners Lori Roy and Carrie Wright renovated a 2,500-square-foot building at 400 S. Sixth St. with a bar and restaurant seating area, and added an outdoor patio area before opening their second location on Nov. 15 of last year. Lunch hours were added two months later.

But on July 24, they posted the following on their HopTown Sunnyside Facebook page:

“With sad hearts, the HopTown team is announcing that the doors to our Sunnyside location are now closed. Thank you to the Sunnyside community and the Sunnyside Port for welcoming us. We loved meeting new friends and neighbors … and those who became our loyal ‘regulars.’

“We will miss you and the families and businesses that have supported us the past eight months. One last thank you to the fantastic staff that we got to work with day in and day out. Thankfully, some of the staff will be able to transfer to the Donald location.”

A message from the Yakima Herald-Republic about the reason for the closure was not returned.

HopTown’s original location, at 2560 Donald Road near Wapato, remains open for dinner Wednesdays and Thursdays, and for lunch and dinner Fridays through Sundays. Visit their Facebook page for more information.
