Many people rave about the deals they score at warehouse clubs like Costco. These retailers offer exclusive discounts on groceries, household goods, clothes, electronics, and more. Thanks to the low prices, shopping at Costco can help you keep more money in your checking account.

You must invest in a yearly membership to lock in the best prices and shop at your local club. But that’s not the case if you’re shopping from home. Did you know you can shop at Costco.com without a membership card? Here’s how to shop at Costco without paying a yearly fee.

Anyone can shop at Costco.com

In addition to having nearly 900 warehouse club locations around the globe, Costco sells goods on its website. While you must have a membership to shop in-club, you don’t need to be a member to shop at Costco.com.

Shopping online is an excellent option if you want to try some products before you invest in a membership. However, non-members pay a surcharge to shop at Costco.com. You’ll pay a 5% surcharge at checkout if you don’t have a membership. It’s also worth noting that some online Costco items are members-only, meaning they aren’t available for sale without being logged in as a member.

The additional surcharge expense may not be a huge deal if you place a small order, but the fee could add up if you place a sizable order. If you decide to join, you’ll have the option to do so at checkout. Once you become a member, the surcharge will be removed from your total.

Is a Costco membership worth it?

Should you join? Only you can decide if it’s worthwhile to become a member. Getting familiar with the products sold at the retailer before you spend money on a membership is a good idea. You can browse the Costco website or mobile app to see what’s available.

You should also consider how far away your nearest club is. If you hope to shop in-club, it will be beneficial if there is a club near your home or work. You may feel more inclined to use your membership perks often — making your investment worthwhile.

Finally, consider your finances. At the time of writing, a Costco membership costs $60 to $120 per year. Only spend money on a membership if it’s within budget. If you can afford the cost and will use the benefits provided, it may be a smart idea to join.

If you’re considering joining Costco…

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a Costco member, you should know that membership prices are about to increase $5 to $10 per year. As of Sept. 1, 2024, a Gold Star membership will cost $65 annually, and the Executive membership will cost $130. By joining before September, you can save yourself a few dollars on your first year of membership.

Also, Costco provides a money-back guarantee on your membership. If you’re unhappy with your membership at any time, you can cancel it and receive a refund.
