The event highlighted the state and federal funding awards the borough received in 2023 and 2024 which, according to the borough, make it possible for the following goals to be achieved:
1) replace legacy cast iron gas pipes in the borough (Federal Funding Award: $10.8 million total)
2) promote the revitalization of the Southgate neighborhood through improvements to pedestrian safety (State Funding Awards: $1,384,871) and stormwater infrastructure (Federal Funding Award: $3.5 million total)
Numerous borough representatives and state and federal elected officials attended the event, including Rep. John Joyce (R-Franklin/Adams Counties), who spoke about how replacing old, cast-iron pipes will drastically improve the safety and efficiency of the region’s gas lines.
“By replacing these cast-iron pipes, they [will then] carry natural gas with modern safe materials,” Joyce said. “The project will continue to make our energy grid grow to be more efficient, prevent leaks, and lower costs.”
Officials say the federal funding is a huge help towards this decades-long transformation.
