MANITOWOC – Work on Manitowoc’s first new hotel in two decades tops the list of local business news in July.

Here’s the latest on five local business stories you might have missed last month.

Ground broken on city’s first new hotel in over 20 years.

Crews broke ground on a new hotel near Interstate 43, perhaps in time for the National Football League’s draft coming to Green Bay in 2025, and a formal ground-breaking event was held July 23.

Chicago-based Odyssey Hotels Group broke ground on a new Hampton Inn by Hilton near the city’s industrial park across the street from AMC Classic Manitowoc 10 movie theater, at 2555 S. 44th St.

It’s part of a larger project announced several years ago that could also include a Marriott-brand hotel and a restaurant.

Ross Dress for Less opens, but retail space is for sale.

Ross Dress for Less discount clothing store opened its doors in late July. The store has been in the works for more than a year. It joins Harbor Freight Tools and Dunham’s Tools to fill the old Shopko site at 3415 Calumet Ave.

Ross Dress for Less is expanding rapidly throughout the country, with 90 new retail stores planned to open in 2024.

At the same time, the 87,000-square-foot retail space that houses the stores recently went on the market for $7.46 million.

Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels also confirmed a new Pizza Hut is under construction at the corner of the parking lot at 3415 Calumet Ave.

A.C.E. breaks ground on HTT expansion in Sheboygan.

In other construction news, Manitowoc-based A.C.E. Building Service broke ground in July on an expansion for HTT, Inc., in Sheboygan.

The expansion will add 31,920 square feet to HTT’s current footprint. The project is expected to be done by December, according to a news release.

“We are honored to have been selected to collaborate with HTT Inc. on this project,” said A.C.E Building President Chris Herzog in the release.

Badger quickly back in business after electrical system breakdown.

And the popular S.S. Badger hit a speed bump (speed wave?) when a part of its electrical system broke down during its cross across Lake Michigan from Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan.

The car ferry experienced a mechanical failure of its ramping system in mid-July that caused Lake Michigan Carferry Inc., which owns and operates the boat, to suspend cross-lake service.

The company engaged a quick-response team of Great Lakes partners to assess the situation and solve the issue as quickly and safely as possible, according to a news release from Lake Michigan Carferry.

The ship was up and running the next day.
