DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – Several people stopped at local stores Saturday to take advantage of Iowa’s Tax-Free Weekend before it ended. Iowa’s Tax-Free Weekend allows customers to avoid sales tax on clothing or shoes that have a sell price of less than $100.
Pamela Schmelzer, a woman who did some shopping at the Ritzi Rerun Saturday. Schmelzer says every little bit helps.
“I mean, something you think you’re going to get for $19 cost you like 22 because of taxes. So where you get a tax-free weekend, it’s quite a break,” said Schmelzer
For an even bigger discount on clothes and shoes, Schmelzer says she noticed people are becoming more picky about the stores they shop at.
“The way the economy is now, people are turning to the resale the consignment stores. And this is the best in the quad cities. There’s a number of them, but this is the best one,” said Schmelzer.
Sherry Hopkins, the owner of the Ritizi Reruns says the no sales tax weekend always helps with foot traffic.
“The no sales tax does get them out shopping a lot more. But then we add on our big half off sale on top of that, we do that twice a year, and it really pulls them in and they get we’ve sold a lot of kids clothes and shoes for them to be able to, you know, go back to school,” said Hopkins.
Hopkins says some items they resell are brand new and they carry a lot of common big-name brands that people can normally find at a big retailer or the mall. However, because they are a lower-end reseller Hopkins says her store has become popular among the younger generation.
“They could come here and get the same things basically, for such a less fraction and so much more. I mean, they can walk out of here with quite a few bags of stuff. And a lot of them don’t want to have the same thing that everybody else has,” said Hopkins.
