ON YOUR SIDE: What you need to know about the tax-free weekend in Missouri

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The first day of school is just around the corner, and back-to-school shopping is in full swing.

All counties in the state of Missouri are participating in a “Back to School” tax-free weekend, during which certain clothing, personal computers, and general school supplies can be purchased without sales tax.

The tax free weekend is running from Friday, August 2nd, until Sunday, August 4th.

The sales tax exemption is limited to the following items and restrictions:

Clothing:

Including: Any article of clothing or item intended for wearing including disposable diapers for infants and shoes for adults.

Not including: Watches, watchbands, jewelry, handbags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, scarves, ties, headbands, or belt buckles. any article of wearing apparel intended to be worn on or about the human body including, but not limited to, disposable diapers for infants or adults and footwear.

Personal computers:

Including: Laptop, desktop, tower computer system with central processing unit, random access memory, a storage drive, a display monitor, a keyboard, devices designed for use in conjunction with a personal computer such as a disk drive, microphone, modems, motherboard, mouse, multimedia speaker, printer, scanner, single-user hardware, single-user operating system, soundcard, or video card. Computer software must have a taxable value of $350 or less.

School supplies:

Includes: Any item used by students in a classroom for educational purposes such as textbooks, notebooks, paper, writing instruments, crayons, art supplies, rulers, book bags, backpacks, handheld calculators, graphing calculators valued at $150 or less, chalk, maps, globes.

Does not include: Watches, radios, CD players, headphones, sporting equipment, portable desktop telephones, copiers or office equipment, furniture, fixtures.
