Amazon Fresh opened in the Potomac Yard Shopping Center today at 3801 Richmond Highway — four years since the former Shoppers Food Warehouse closed.
“I’m glad it finally opened,” said customer Anita Taylor. “We’ve been waiting almost five years for another grocery store.”
Regional Manager Jim Gillespie said that dozens of employees are working at Amazon’s newest store and that it’s his 42nd store opening.
“We had giveaways to all the customers,” Gillespie said. “First customer line was a $100 gift card. We had gift cards for the next 100 customers. Plus, we’ve got prices that are comparable to the market, and then if you’re a prime member, there’s even additional discounts. And then if you have your prime credit card, there’s either another additional additional discount.”
Amazon says that customers enjoy an “elevated in-store experience.”
“Customers can take advantage of fast grocery delivery and pickup options, while also enjoying ways to make grocery shopping in store more convenient, like the Amazon Dash Cart, Amazon One, and Alexa kiosks in the store,” the company said in a release.
The store is open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Shoppers in Potomac Yard closed at the end of 2019 and Amazon Fresh was announced to go into the space in 2021. The new 50,000 square-foot store is located in the northern section of Potomac Yard near the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus and less than two miles from Amazon’s HQ2 development in Crystal City.
