Putting a date on one of the most anticipated store openings in St. Tammany Parish, Costco plans to open its new Covington location on Aug. 28, a company official said.
After years of rumors, the Washington-based retail giant formally announced the Covington store — its first on the northshore — in 2022. Construction began earlier this year on the $46 million, 159,000-square-foot store on Pinnacle Parkway.
“We’re on the homestretch,” General Manager David Hernandez said.
Hernandez said the hiring process is continuing and the company expects to bring on as many as 200 new employees for the Covington store. For information on jobs, visit the company’s website, Costco.com.
“The community is really excited for us to be here,” Hernandez said. “We’re really excited to be here.”
The store is being built on 12 acres in the Nord du Lac shopping area, which fronts the busy Interstate 12 corridor just west of the Tchefuncte River.
This will be Costco’s second metro New Orleans store. The company has a store now in Mid-City New Orleans.
Costco operates almost 900 warehouse stores across the world, with more than 600 of those in the U.S. In addition to Covington, the company plans to open new stores in Texas and Washington in August, Yahool Finance reports.
Costco reported June sales of $24.4 billion, up more than 7% from the previous June.
St. Tammany Corporation, the parish’s economic development agency, has said the Covington store is expected to generate $60 million in property and sales taxes over the next decade.
Nord du Lac and the Costco site sits across I-12 from another bustling shopping area, River Chase, which includes a Sam’s Club.
Like Sam’s, Costco is open only to members, who pay annual fees to shop there.
