LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – At first glance, during the day, it’s hard to figure out exactly what more than a couple dozen vertical structures are on West Sunset and North Valle Verde.
One business owner said they look like some kind of electrical fencing or safety measure.
The objects are revealed when the sun goes down. They are lights that wrap around a shopping plaza. So far, they are getting good reviews.
“It gives you better visibility, plus safety. So people don’t like going into dark corners,” said smoke shop owner Amit Shukla.
“It helps because the more light you have in a place, the more security it gives to people to stop by. The darker it gets after hours, it makes you think twice, should I get out of the car or not,” said water store business owner Victor Robles.
Businesses say the lights are brand new and hope their design attracts new customers to the shopping area. They also applaud the owner for other improvements to the property, including signs above each business, which they say the owner paid for, as well as new landscaping.
“I love it. This place used to be dark. It used to be covered in trees. There used to be a lot of homeless people hanging around because this building was getting run down. But now it looks clean, upscale. The customers are noticing. They’re giving us compliments on the way the building looks,” said Shukla.
The City of Henderson has crime prevention information called CPTED, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. It includes some things being done at the shopping plaza on West Sunset, including landscaping, that allows for people to be seen on a property, as well as increased lighting.
