Messaging and VoIP apps coming soon to Android Automotive cars

Must read

Google has announced the launch of a new category of apps called “Connectivity” for cars with Google built-in. This category will consist of approved messaging and VoIP apps that drivers can use while driving.

Here’s What We Know

Google has been limiting the capabilities of the apps on this platform for safety reasons, so as not to distract drivers from the road. However, given that millions of people use Android in their cars every day, Google has decided to expand the platform’s capabilities.

Here’s How It Works

  • Messaging apps: users will be able to read or reply to important messages from their personal or business contacts while driving. For safety, the voice assistant can use speech synthesis to read out incoming messages, and voice input will allow you to send replies. Full keyboard input will only be available when parked.
  • VoIP applications: Only audio calls will be supported. Video calls are not possible due to the lack of inward-facing cameras in most vehicles. However, voice calls will allow you to take important personal or work calls while driving. Some VoIP applications may even allow you to start or receive calls using your voice.

There are many obvious benefits to including support for messaging and VoIP apps in Android Automotive:

  • Convenience: drivers can stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues without taking their eyes off the road.
  • Safety: voice features and a limited user interface will help minimise the risk of distraction.
  • Demand: many users are already asking about the possibility of using such apps in their cars.

Google did not announce the exact release date, but noted that the Communication category will appear “soon”. The arrival of messaging and VoIP apps on Android Automotive is expected to be a significant step forward for the platform.
