Google Pixel 9 series launching soon: New processor, better camera and everything else we are expecting

Google is also set to debut its highly anticipated Pixel 9 series at the “Made by Google” event on August 13, 2024. Although Google typically hosts its Pixel launch in fall, this year the the launch has been positioned early ahead of Apple’s iPhone 16 series, positioning Google to capture market attention before its rival. While Google has kept the details of the upcoming Pixel phones under the wraps, rumours and speculation are already over the internet giving us a brief on what we can expect.

Here is a brief round-up on what we can expect from the upcoming Pixel 9 series, based on the latest rumours and leaks.

New Pixel phones on card?

For the first time, Google is not expected to bring 2 but four smartphones in the Pixel 9 series. Alongside the standard Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, reports suggest that the new series could include a larger Pixel 9 Pro XL and a foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This expanded lineup is likely on card to compete directly with Apple’s diversified iPhone offerings.

Pixel 9 with new design changes

The Pixel 9 series is anticipated to bring significant design changes. Leaked images- as suggested by Android Authority points on a flat frame design, moving away from the curved edges of previous models. The new design also features a floating island-style camera module, detached from the frame, replacing the camera visor design seen in the Pixel 8 series. Additionally, Google is speculated to bring the Pixel series in vibrant new colour options, including a pink variant possibly called “Peony”.

Improved Pixel 9 display

The Pixel 9 series is also expected to continue using Samsung’s OLED panels, specifically the improved M14 OLED, which is also rumoured to be used in Apple’s next-generation iPhones. This new panel promises increased brightness and durability, enhancing the overall display quality.

Google Pixel phones are always lauded for their camera capabilities, and the Pixel 9 series is set to continue this trend with significant upgrades. The report suggests that in Pixel 9 series, the primary camera sensor might be larger, potentially featuring a variable aperture lens. The Pro models are expected to include a triple camera setup, with enhancements to the ultrawide and telephoto lenses. The return of the temperature sensor, first introduced with the Pixel 8 Pro, is also anticipated.

Pixel 9 series with faster processor and performance

The Pixel 9 series will likely debut Google’s latest Tensor G4 processor. Although it continues to be based on Samsung’s Exynos chips, the Tensor G4 will promise significant improvements in performance and efficiency. It will also reportedly include a new modem, the Samsung Modem 5400, which supports faster and more power-efficient connectivity, including 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) for satellite-based communication.

Pixel 9 series to get ultrasonic fingerprint scanner

One of the most exciting upgrades for the new Pixel lineup is the switch from optical to ultrasonic fingerprint scanners. The Pixel 9 series is rumoured to use Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 scanner, the same model found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. This change will address Pixel users’ long-standing issues with the under-display fingerprint sensors used in previous Pixel models, promising faster and more reliable unlocking.

Google add Gemini AI features

As expected, the Pixel 9 series will come with the latest and exclusive software features from Google. This will include new AI capabilities such as the Gemini AI assistant and Circle to Search. The Pixel 9 is also anticipated to introduce three new AI features: an improved “Add Me” feature, a new “Studio” app for AI image generation and editing, and the Pixel Screenshots feature, which offers a privacy-focused, searchable timeline of user screenshots.

While the renders paint an exciting picture of the upcoming Pixel 9 series, we will have to wait a bit more to get the final hands on the new Pixel 9.
