New Hyde Park: Easy LIRR commute, shopping, taxes draw buyers

Must read

THE SCOOP This one-square-mile village, which touts itself as one of the nation’s oldest settlements, is in renewal mode as it creates new recreational options and celebrations of cultural diversity.

New Hyde Park Village has been busy with about $15 million in projects for new amenities, upgrades and repairs, much of it paid by grants, said Mayor Christopher Devane. A community center with various meeting rooms and computers is being constructed next to village hall, where work has exposed the 1905 building’s original tin ceilings and vaulted archways.

At Memorial Park, the dog playground and bocce ball courts are among popular upgrades, the mayor said, while plans are being made for a new park to liven up the area by the train station.

“We’re trying to build a community,” said Devane, who’s lived in New Hyde Park for 25 years. “We’re trying to build pride. What we want to see is the next generation stick around in the village.”

Touting the proximity to Manhattan, he added, “It’s a great village, especially if you work in the city. You can just jump on the railroad and get into the city in a half hour.”

As part of its mission, village officials made a “conscious decision” to embrace the growing diversity in their midst by holding concerts and fetes with free food and entertainment — Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, Chinese New Year, Latin holidays and St. Patrick’s Day for starters, Devane said. Many of the businesses and residents have been generous, providing food and other supplies for free, the mayor said.

It was the English and Dutch who settled in the area in the early 1600s. Some of the settlers’ original records are among the oldest of local government documents in the nation, according to the village website, and they are preserved in the North Hempstead town clerk’s office.

For buyers, New Hyde Park stands out on cost and location, said Shri Singh, an associate broker at Berkshire Hathaway.

While listings topping $1 million have appeared in the past few years, housing prices and taxes are lower than the villages around it, Singh said. Many buyers are young parents who like the school districts, he added, and being close to Roosevelt Field mall is another plus.

“It’s a very convenient location to go to the city and shopping,” Singh said. “People don’t want to go too far east, and taxes are really affordable.”
