You won’t often find discounts on the latest flagship smartphones, but with Amazon Prime Day just around the corner, a few great deals are starting to pop up.

One of the best phones you can buy in 2024, the Pixel 8 is so good that I bought one for myself. I’ve been using it for more than four months now and there are lots of reasons why I like it.

Why I like the Google Pixel 8

The Google Pixel 8 is one of the most popular Android smartphones, and I can see why. From the minute I opened the box, I was impressed.

The design is super sleek with a unique camera bar across the back, and it comes in a choice of sophisticated colours including obsidian black, rose pink and hazel.

Its size is one of the biggest reasons I bought the Pixel 8. My hands are too small for a ginormous mini-tablet. Google’s standard flagship has perfect proportions, I can use it one-handed and it fits easily into my pocket. I don’t mind if that means a smaller screen, it still has a 6.2-inch display which is fine for me.

Speaking of the screen, it’s a beauty. The OLED panel is colourful without being over the top and it’s very bright which bodes well for summer days on the horizon. A lot of smartphones are hard to see under sunlight but the Pixel 8 doesn’t suffer from too much glare. And unlike the Pixel 7, the screen can now reach a refresh rate of 120Hz, so it’s smoother than ever to use.

Another reason I bought the Pixel 8 is the camera. I don’t use the zoom functionality much so I don’t need the Google Pixel 8 Pro‘s additional telephoto lens. What’s great is that the main lens is identical to its pricier sibling, and you get the same set of AI-based features.

Photos from the camera come out really well, they’re vibrant without looking unnatural and the level of detail is impressive. Even shots in low light look good!

I love the Magic Editor. This clever editing tool allows you to delete photobombers and move objects around the shot. Also worth mentioning is Best Take which lets you combine group shots, everyone can pick their favourite photo of themselves and it’ll put them all into one perfect picture.

Moving swiftly to software, all Pixels come with the purest form of the Android operating system. It’s simple to navigate and looks great. Some versions of Android have too much going on, while others can look a little cartoonish. Pixel strikes the balance just right which is why it’s my favourite version of the OS.

Thanks to the Google Tensor G3 chipset under the hood, the Pixel 8 can cope with just about anything you can throw at it. It’s speedy and can process demanding AI tasks quickly, as it was designed to do.

All in all, the Google Pixel 8 is a fantastic smartphone – it looks the part, it leads the way with its innovative AI features and now it’s a great price too.
