Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – State Representative Mary Sattler Peltola announced that Alaska will receive $53,998,114 in FY24 Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Grants through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These funds will be used to improve Alaska’s roads and ports.
“Alaska’s infrastructure has suffered from permafrost, rising sea levels, and decades of under-investment. This funding will help address these issues,” said Representative Peltola. “I’m proud to advocate for Alaska in the House of Representatives.”
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg highlighted the significance of the grants, stating, “With President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re funding projects nationwide to make roads safer, improve transportation resilience, and enhance supply chains, including 148 projects in Alaska.”
Key projects funded include:
Alaska Highway Permafrost Degradation Restoration Project: $25 million will be used to restore approximately 45 miles of the Alaska Highway affected by thawing permafrost. The project includes developing aggregate sources, improving drainage, restoring highway slopes and surfaces, resurfacing with bituminous treatment, replacing guardrails, and installing thermosyphons.
Port Development Project in Nulato Village: $3,998,114 will fund planning, permitting, and engineering design for commercial port development and bank armoring on the Yukon River, as well as dock facilities in Mukluk Slough.
Wrangell Harbor Basin Revitalization and Transportation Resiliency Project: $25 million will be used to plan, design, and construct float and anchoring systems within the Wrangell Harbor Basin. This project will also construct water, electrical, and fire suppression systems and relocate Inner Harbor parking.
These grants are part of a larger effort to improve infrastructure across the country, ensuring safer and more resilient transportation systems.
