Watch Out AMC! Netflix Gets Into the Popcorn Business

Must read

Netflix is getting into the popcorn business.

The streaming giant is expanding its consumer business with a push into snacks, partnering with Popcorn Indiana to launch a line of popcorn under the brand name Netflix: Now Popping. Now Popping will be available beginning today at Walmart’s across the country (you can find locations here).

Among the flavors being launched are “Cult Classic Cheddar Kettle Corn” and “Swoonworthy Cinnamon Kettle Corn.”

Netflix, as it happens, is not the first entertainment company to explore the world of popcorn, or even to work with Walmart on a line of popcorn.

In 2021, AMC Theatres announced its planned expansion into the snack category, including both microwavable and bagged varieties. And last year the company announced its own deal with Walmart, which sells both varieties.

Popcorn, in fact, has become an even bigger business for theaters, driven in part by collectible popcorn tubs like the viral Dune: Part Two container (uh, Google it) or the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine offerings.

Netflix, meanwhile, has also been building out its consumer and live events business, seeking to create a revenue stream outside of streaming.

Netflix launched an online shop in 2021, featuring merchandise from its shows, and subsequently created a pop-up version at The Grove in Los Angeles.

It also created a pop-up restaurant in Los Angeles called Netflix Bites, featuring menus curated by chefs featured in its programming, and has created interactive experiences in New York, L.A. and other markets based on shows like Bridgerton and Squid Game.

Next year it will essentially combine all of those things when it launches its first two Netflix House locations in Texas and Pennsylvania, combining shopping, food and experiences in locations that used to be department stores.

They may even sell the popcorn.
