Business Cycle: Hershberger Road apartments proposed

Must read

Before he died in 2018, Roanoke Valley business owner Venkat Reddy had an unrealized vision for an apartment complex east of Hershberger and Williamson roads. His heirs have filed a proposal to build 14 buildings with 170 units for the future Hershberger Meadows.

The filing by Hershberger Properties LLC situates the complex on 7 acres bounded by Hershberger, Winsloe Drive and Oaklawn Avenue Northwest. City staff had not issued building permits as of Wednesday, but was actively reviewing the proposal.

Having previously secured key approvals, the project isn’t subject to further public hearings.

There are upset neighbors. A number of property owners in the neighborhood declined to sell their land to accommodate the project and could now see it built virtually next door.

“Oh my God, really?” said 16-year neighborhood resident Cheryl Patterson as she viewed the plan’s depiction of two of the buildings in a meadow immediately behind her backyard. “Yep, they’re coming right through.”

“My God what kind of a life are we going to have?” she said.

“I had an 11-point (deer, paired with a doe,) that just had a fawn and they’re back there, back there today,” she said, listing the rest of the animal community as including a ground hog, pair of nesting falcons and feral cats. “Of course there’s homeless people off and on … Where are all these things going to go when they start demolishing and grading?”

Deepa Reddy, a principal in the project, could not be reached for comment.
