GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – Alachua County announces a new roadway improvement project has begun. The project looks to repave a 1.7-mile stretch along Northwest 23rd Avenue, east of Interstate 75. The renovation will cost $9.4 million.
The project is scheduled to be complete in January 2025, but it will depend on the weather. Majority of the work will be done during the night to minimize the impact on daytime traffic.
The road will be completely resurfaced, and stormwater drainage will be added. Also, new turning lanes will be added to reduce traffic and pedestrian crosswalks will be added for safety.
Alachua is also looking at other repaving projects including the Southwest 170th Street in Archer, Parker Roade, and Southwest 20th Avenue. Tom Strom, the county’s transportation engineering manager, says “Thanks to several funding sources, including the voter-approved Wild Spaces Public Places surtax, Alachua County can now address many roadways in need of repair.”
