Joel E. Ahrens, 68, of Dunkirk passed away suddenly, May 16, 2024, at home. Born on Oct. 30, 1955 in Dunkirk, son of the late Elmer and Gladys (Deering) Ahrens.

Joel graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1973 and ultimately served a career as a firefighter that spanned 28 years with the Dunkirk Fire Department, where he served with honor until his retirement in 2015. His passion for helping others extended beyond the fire department as he also worked as a medic for Allstar EMS. He was also an employee of Koch’s Brewery, and most recently as a Bus Driver for First Student.

He played an active role in the Local 616 Firefighter Union and had a history of serving his community even outside of work. During his youth, he worked as a lifeguard and swimming instructor. Joel also took on managerial roles for both the football and swimming teams at Dunkirk High School while he was in school.

Outside of work, Joel enjoyed spending quality time with his family and embarking on memorable family vacations. His hobbies included camping, golfing, collecting Lionel Trains, and passionately following the Buffalo Bills and NASCAR.

Memberships include a lifelong membership to the Dunkirk Exempts, Fredonia Beaver Club, International Firefighter Association, and most importantly, Dunkirk Fire Department Hose Company #1.

Surviving Joel is his son Adam (Christina) Ahrens and daughter Beth (David) Nencetti; sisters Carol (Tim) Smith, and Jean (Bob) Horey; former spouses Michelle Ahrens and Tammie Ahrens; as well as numerous step-children, step-grandchildren, one step-great-granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his Canine companions Gigi and Max.

Preceding is his daughter Janell Ahrens; parents Elmer and Gladys (Deering) Ahrens; sister Linda (late Marvin) Gillson; brother Glenn Ahrens and brother-in-law Mike Kundla.

Relatives and friends are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life at St. John’s United Church of Christ on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11 a.m.. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.
