DAYTON — United freshman hurdler Brinsley Hiscox is going so fast she’s a blur.
Hiscox will be running for a state title in the Division III 100-meter hurdles tonight.
She was third in her heat and fourth overall Thursday in a personal-best 15.22 seconds.
“I don’t remember running my race,” she said. “I’m usually nervous, but not like that.
“I felt it an hour before. The race was a blur.”
She will in the state finals at 6:30 p.m. today at Welcome Stadium.
Defending state champion Anzure Travis of Elmore Woodmore posted the top time Thursday in 14.93 seconds.
“I came in seeded sixth and I’m sitting fourth,” Hiscox said. “Top three is going to be my goal.”
Hiscox has made a believer out of those around her.
“She’s real good,” United junior Kollyn Wells said. “She’s only a freshman and is going to nationals.”
“She’s a great freshman,” United junior Danny Milburn said. “And a cool person to be around.”
Hiscox also joined senior Katie Dees and juniors Aubrey Benner and Mary Boston on United’s 400 relay team that was sixth in its heat and 17th overall (52.17).
“I’m happy with how I performed,” Hiscox said. “I’m glad our relay team got here and set the school record (last week).”
The top two in each of the three heats plus the next two fastest times qualify for today’s state finals.
“My goal was to get here and beat the school record,” Hiscox said.
She is chasing the marks set by Cris Heim, who was the 1997 Division II state champion in the 300 hurdles (43.75). Heim added a third in 1998 along with a fifth in the 100 hurdles.
“I’d like to beat the 300 record sometime, but I knew it wasn’t going to happen this year,” Hiscox said.
The only other United girl to score at state in the hurdles is Sierra Parks who was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 2011.
Hiscox can add her name to that list today.
