Google will shut down the Business Messages feature in Google Maps and Search, announced Google on Tuesday.

The messaging feature is “Google My Business Chat”. It was initially launched in 2017. The feature enabled users to chat directly with businesses via their profiles. However, the feature will no longer be available to users after July 31.

Businesses will no longer be able to receive messages from their Google Business profile after July 31, according to an email Google sent to several business owners.

“We acknowledge this may be difficult news—as we continually improve our tools, we occasionally have to make difficult decisions that may impact the businesses and partners we work with,” Google said in a statement on May 28.

After the due date, users will no longer be able to initiate quick chats with businesses on Maps and Search.

From July 15, customers won’t be able to start new chat conversations with businesses from Google. Those in existing chats will be notified about the phase-out of the feature.

However, Google assured that customers could still find and contact businesses through other means such as website links, business descriptions, and photos shared on the existing Business Profile.

“It’s important to us that Google remains a helpful partner as you manage your business, and we remain committed to this mission,” Google added.
