Built-in Chromecast renamed to ‘Google Cast’

Google has once again renamed the built-in Chromecast feature. In the future, you should look for 'Google Cast' when buying new TVs, speakers, and other devices.

The rebranding went into effect earlier this month at Google's annual developer conference, I/O 2024, as spotted by 9to5Google.

- "Introducing Google Cast (formerly Chromecast built-in). Google Cast (formerly Chromecast built-in) delivers multi-screen TV and audio experiences with speakers," Google announced.

The 'Google Cast' branding is also reflected on Google's official Android.com website.


Google Cast, again
You may recall that built-in Chromecast was originally called Google Cast around 10 years ago. In 2016, Google rebranded the feature to 'Chromecast built-in' and introduced a logo for TVs, speakers, and other devices.


 Google Cast lets you push content from your phone onto the TV wirelessly. Look for the 'Google Cast' logo on TVs, speakers etc.

Google is now reversing that decision, most likely to clear up confusion between built-in Chromecast and the actual Chromecast hardware.

So, going forward, 'Google Cast' refers to the built-in Chromecast feature, while 'Chromecast' refers to the hardware device with 'Google TV', which is a new user interface on top of 'Android TV'. Both 'Android TV' and 'Google TV' devices always feature 'Google Cast'. Clear?
