Drive-by shooting near Shawnee Sports Complex, suspects detained

A drive-by shooting was reported in a neighborhood near the Shawnee Spots Complex in Kanawha County Sunday afternoon.

Dispatchers say that they received several calls around 3 p.m. coming from the facilities. Deputies responded to scene of the shooting at the 200 block of Smoot Avenue and gathered information on the possible suspects as they fled in a vehicle.

Authorities confirmed that several suspects were detained in the Nitro area after police noticed the vehicle while conducting an unrelated traffic stop.

No injuries have been reported at this time and police are currently investigating.

The complex, which was hosting the West Virginia Soccer Association Open Cup featuring teams as young as under-eights participating, was put into a lockdown with the WVSA confirming that it has been lifted and the tournament has been suspended.

West Virginia State University in neighboring Institute was also placed under a precautionary shelter-in-place.
