Google Public Sector Wins New Cloud Deal With New York

Google has made another government technology gain, this time via a two-year deal with New York state.

The New York state Office of Information Technology Services, or ITS, says it has reached a “first-of-its-kind agreement” to provide statewide access to “advanced” technology through a partnership with Google Public Sector.

The deal promises to give state employees access to some of the latest data analytics tools while also “enabling the state to strengthen its disaster recovery capabilities, enhance service delivery and support New York’s ongoing digital transformation,” according to a statement.

The deal, called an Enterprise Cloud Services Agreement, also will help the state connect and integrate systems, which will “improve efficiency and data sharing, simplify the process to access powerful technology tools and reduce overall costs,” according to that statement.

For the next two years, state employees at participating agencies can access Google Cloud services that involve such areas as computing, data analytics, networking and artificial intelligence. The agreement also allows for training and support from Google.

“As the amount of data being generated and safely stored by the state increases, and as our residents expect more and better access to digital services, this collaboration is the right move at the right time,” said New York State Chief Information Officer and Director of ITS Dru Rai in the statement.

Google Public Sector launched in 2022.

It is designed to help local, state, federal and education agencies in the U.S. build better digital tools — and also help Google compete with Amazon, and its Amazon Web Services unit, for a bigger part of the government technology market.

The deal also will help ITS with its continued operation of the “on-premises data center” the agency operates at the Zero Energy Nanotechnology (ZEN) building at the Albany NanoTech Complex in Albany, according to the statement.
