Spring forecast: Sports teams prepare for new season

Must read

Rowan’s spring sports teams all enter their 2025 seasons seeking to continue the success of recent years while looking to reach new heights on the regional and national levels.

Here’s a team-by-team outlook for the new season:

Baseball

As the Profs aim to reach the NCAA Regionals and beyond, head coach Mike Dickson will guide a balanced squad that features veterans who have played key roles in Rowan’s recent success.

The Profs return nine starters – six position players and three pitchers – from last year’s team (29-15) that was the New Jersey Athletic Conference runner-up and reached the NCAA Granville Regional. The squad finished the season ranked 21st in the nation.

Leading the way are veterans Tyler Cannon and Mike Shannon, who each had stellar seasons in 2024. Cannon earned All-America Fourth Team honors as he led the team in hitting, while Shannon was the NJAC Pitcher of the Year.  All-Region performers Jason Morgan (LF) and Phil Sedalis (CF) will be counted on to again be among the Profs’ top offensive threats. Rowan welcomes 15 newcomers, including 11 transfers. Monmouth transfer Eric Sabato (OF) is among those expected to contribute immediately.

Rowan, which is ranked 23rd in the D3baseball.com Top 25, begins the season March 1-2 at Hampden-Sydney. The home opener is set for March 5 against John Jay before the Profs embark on an eight-game spring break trip to Florida (March 13-20).

Lacrosse

The women’s lacrosse team, under head coach Lindsay Delaney, enters the new season with a great deal of optimism due to a solid core group of upperclassmen. The Profs return 21 players, including their top seven scorers, from the team that was the NJAC runner-up for the third consecutive season.

Molly Green, a two-time NJAC Midfielder of the Year, has established herself as one of the top players in the region, and is poised to make her mark nationally in her final season. Green and fellow All-Region selection Elaina Corson topped the Profs in scoring in 2024, while both players have amassed over 100 goals in their careers.

All-Region honorees Sophia Schiavo and Katie Montenero will shore up the Profs’ defense with All-NJAC honoree Hannah Lombardo joining Green to provide Rowan with a strong midfield. Fifth-year goalie Mel Rodgers will be back in the cage with third-leading scorer Calista Burke and assist leader Trish Gillen returning to key the Profs’ offense. Rowan welcomes five newcomers this year and defender Abby Leporati is one who could make an immediate impact.

The Profs started the season Feb.  22 at Ursinus and will play their home opener Feb. 26 vs. Drew.

Softball

The softball team is coming off back-to-back NCAA Championship Series appearances and, in 2024, finished with a program-best tie for third in the nation.  The Profs (41-10, 16-2 NJAC) won their 12th all-time NJAC Championship and captured the NCAA Regional and Super Regional titles at home, where the team boasted an impressive 22-1 record.

The 2025 squad enters the year ranked third in the nation and features a bevy of returners led by All-American pitcher Emily McCutcheon and National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Gold Glove winner Liz McCaffery, who was Rowan’s first-ever recipient of that award. With fellow All-Region selections Payton MacNair, Rylee Lutz and McKenzie Melvin, the Profs are poised to make a deep postseason run once again. Rowan also has a talented group of newcomers led by Manhattan transfer Makayla Veneziale.

Last year, Hall of Fame coach Kim Wilson guided the NJAC and NFCA Regional Coaching Staffs of the Year and recorded her 900th victory. She enters the new season ranked fourth in victories (919) among active Division III head coaches.

The Profs are scheduled to play their opener Feb. 26 at home against SUNY-Oneonta. They’ll then head to North Carolina (March 7-8) and to Florida (March 14-21) for games over spring break.

Men’s Outdoor Track & Field

Rowan finished in a tie for third place at last year’s NCAA Championships and expects to contend again for the title as it returns 10 All-Americans. Leading the way is defending NCAA Champion Kwaku Nkrumah (110m hurdles), who became the program’s first national champion since 2021 and the first Prof hurdler since 2017 to capture the crown.

All-Americans Nana Agyemang, Marquise Young, Elijah Hendricks, Shamar Love, Robert McKinney, Anaias Hughes, Jamile Gantt and Damitrius Hester are also back and looking to help Rowan climb even higher in the championship standings. A talented group of newcomers is expected to contribute, including freshman hurdler Jamir Brown, who has already made his mark with his performance during the indoor season.

Under head coach Dustin Dimit, the Profs have dominated the conference as of late, winning their ninth straight and 22nd overall NJAC Championship in 2024. Rowan swept the top awards last year and will be looking to repeat behind Young (Outstanding Track Athlete), Hester (Outstanding Field Athlete) and a host of Profs who earned NJAC individual titles.

The Profs open the outdoor season March 28 at Widener and will host their only home meet of the year, the Oscar Moore Invitational, on April 12.

Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

First-year head coach Shedrick Elliott III will guide a team that has made great strides under his leadership and expects to build on successes from the fall and winter seasons.

The Profs boasted four All-Americans in four events last year and hope to increase that number in 2025.

Graduate student Molly Lodge is back after earning All-America honors in the 400 meters and on the 4×400 relay, as Nevaeh Lorjuste and Jasmine Pope also return from that relay, which placed fourth in the NCAA Championships.

Thrower Izzy Deal will lead the Profs in the field events as she was a two-time All-American with her performances in the javelin and the shot at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The fifth-year student-athlete also earned selection to the prestigious College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Team.

That group of veterans, along with others such as Jasmine Broadway, Gabriela Pagano, Jasmine Pope and Anna Sasse, hope to propel the Profs to an NJAC Championship. Rowan finished in second place at last year’s meet—just 27.5 points out of first place.
