Canada vs. USA preview

With their backs against the wall, Jon Cooper’s troops responded with a 5-3 win over Finland. Canada looked set to cruise to the final horn but Finland made it interesting, scoring two quick goals in the final few minutes to give Team Canada a scare.

Team USA locked up their spot in the final with an emotional win in hostile territory on Saturday. Monday’s game was essentially a tuneup match for the final as Mike Sullivan’s men suffered a 2-1 defeat versus Sweden.

Canada vs. USA predictions

The Red and White needed a breakout performance from its top players and they certainly got that with Nathan McKinnon against Finland. The Halifax native potted two goals on three shots he fired away toward the opposing goalie. Through three round-robin games, the 29-year-old has amassed 10 shots on net.

Connor McDavid displayed why he’s one of the best players in the world with his dominant showing on Monday. In just under 17 minutes of ice time, the Edmonton Oilers product opened the game scoring within five minutes of the first puck drop. McDavid assisted Canada’s third goal which was sniped by Brayden Point. In three tournament outings, the 28-year-old has cataloged a pair of goals and assists.

Sam Reinhart inked his name into the box score for the first time in the 4 Nations event. He finished the affair against Finland with the most points collected by a team Canada player inside the 60-minute frame with three helpers.

On the blue line, Zach Werenski is having a fantastic tournament playing a key role in the United States finishing at the top in round-robin play. The 27-year-old leads the tournament in assists with five, as he added to his total by facing Sweden on Monday night. The defenseman is having a career year with the Columbus Blue Jackets, amassing 59 points in 55 regular season outings.

Also assisting in USA’s single tally on Monday, Jack Eichel secured his fourth assist of the competition. The Massachusetts native logged heavy minutes with Team USA throwing lines in the blender with players leaving the skirmish for precautionary measures. Eichel put in over 22 minutes of work winning 56.3 percent of his draws from the face-off dot.

Canada vs. USA betting tip

If this tilt is anywhere near the intensity of the first game we got to witness, we are in for a treat on Thursday in this rematch. It’s been publicized that the distain between these two nations adds to the fireworks on the ice, this time USA has a home soil advantage.

These two nations are fairly even on roster construction but the edge is the blue crease goes to the United States. Connor Hellebuyck is looking like a two-time Vezina trophy winner on the big stage so far, only allowing two goals in as many starts. He left Canada frustrated on Saturday night and he could be in their heads on Thursday again. Jordan Binnington has been a bit of Jekyll and Hyde between the posts making timely key stops or conceding soft goals that shift any momentum away from Canada.

It has taken time but Canada seems to be finding its rhythm after the masterstroke move by Jon Cooper juggling the lines. USA seems to be bitten by the injury bug at the worst time leading up to the final, with superstar players being withheld from the lineup versus Sweden. There is a solid chance all the players that missed Monday’s affair will dress for Thursday’s encounter but that said, due to the health of the likes of Matthews, the Tkachuk brothers and McAvoy, key members playing banged has changed the element.

We feel Canada is the team trending upwards in this tournament with its new look likes and the return of Cale Makar. The stud defenseman missed the first bout against the Americans last Saturday. His presence against Finland was a huge boost to this Canadian squad. The Canadians wanted this rematch, our feeling is they should successfully seek their revenge in enemy territory.
