USA vs. Canada preview

Mike Sullivan’s crew looked to be in for a long night taking on a scrappy Finnish side Thursday evening.

After 40 minutes the Americans were only up by a goal, but in the third period the floodgates opened and USA amassed four goals in the final frame thumping Finland 6-1.

Jon Cooper’s men kicked off the tournament in dramatic style blowing two 2-goal leads in regulation time only to secure a 4-3 win in overtime against Sweden on Wednesday night.

USA vs. Canada predictions

One of the reasons USA raised their play in the third period was head coach Sullivan reshuffled his lines putting the Tkachuk brothers together. The stroke of genius paid off as the pair combined notching three goals and an assist versus Finland just alone in the final 20-minute stretch.

On the backend, Zach Werenski logged the most minutes between his colleagues on Team USA, finishing just under 22 minutes of play. The 27-year-old Columbus Blue Jackets member recorded the most assists in USA’s opening game, attaining three assists.

One of Canada’s heroes on Wednesday night was the highly decorated Sidney Crosby who came up clutch against Sweden. The oldest player in the tournament amassed three assists, and one of them set up the winning goal for his country in OT. The game’s first star didn’t look out of place playing alongside Nate McKinnon and Mark Stone.

After a relatively quiet evening on five-on-five play, Mitch Marner was the man of the hour scoring in overtime to send the Bell Centre into a frenzy.

With Toronto this year, the 27-year-old is currently tied for fourth overall in the Art Ross Trophy chase with 71 points, which happens to be the same amount his Team Canada line-mate has with his club, Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid.

The concern in the blue crease was on full display against Sweden as Jordan Binnington conceded a couple of goals he would’ve liked to have back.

The St.Louis Blues’ netminder does deserve some credit for keeping Canada alive in three-on-three overtime, eventually finishing with 23 saves on 26 shots.

USA vs. Canada betting tip

From what we saw between these candidates in their first affairs in the tournament they had two different playing styles. Canada’s game plan highly emphasized speed and skill while the USA brought a heavier style of play finishing checks trying to wear down their opponent.

Before the puck dropped on Wednesday, the consensus was these two rivals were on a collision course to meet in the final, boasting the top two talented rosters.

Saturday’s skirmish in primetime will be a battle and could go either way, with that said we feel backing the Canadians is the play.

When the team repping the red maple leaf on their chest has Sidney Crosby in the lineup, they have won their last 26 contests.

There is a reason why is he considered one of the best in the game, his leadership on and off the ice makes a huge difference.

The Canadian roster has supplemental big game and Stanley Cup experience, playing in an electric building with the fans backing the Red and White, our feeling is Canada wins a tight one on Saturday.
