USA vs. Finland preview

The United States will be led by Pittsburgh Penguins head coach, Mike Sullivan.

USA will be without one of the best defensemen in the NHL, Quinn Hughes as he is out with a lower-body injury and was replaced by Jake Sanderson of the Ottawa Senators.

Finland will have Antti Pennanen calling the shots from the bench as he has some international experience coaching, most recently on the U20 Finnish side.

Like the USA, Finland will be missing a key blueliner in this event as the Dallas Stars’ product, Miro Heiskanen will be absent representing his country.

USA vs. Finland predictions

Named the captain for the USA, all eyes will be on Auston Matthews as he’s arguably the most lethal sniper in this tournament. This year due to lingering injuries, Matthews hasn’t been as prolific as in other seasons lighting the lamp but the three-time “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner is always a threat with the puck on his stick scoring 20 goals through 40 outings with Toronto during the 2024-25 campaign.

The highest-scoring American point-getter currently in the NHL, Jack Eichel will be one of the many characters on this team that will be leaned upon to produce the offence. Currently sitting sixth overall in the NHL points race with 69 points, the Vegas Golden Knights’ member will look to catch his career high of 82 points once the NHL season resumes.

Team USA are the envy of their counterparts in the blue crease as the United States has three worthy number-one goalies on this roster. Between the trio tandem of Jeremy Swayman, Jake Oettinger and Connor Hellebuyck they have combined a .911 save percentage with their respective club teams this season.

Captaining Finland in the 4-Nations is the two-time Selke Trophy winner, Aleksander Barkov. The Stanley Cup winner is a proven leader as he is also the captain of the Florida Panthers.

The 29-year-old had amassed 763 regular season points in 784 games, dating back to his rookie season in 2013.

Another Finn with Stanley Cup experience, Mikko Rantanen will be heavily relied on carrying this thin forward group.

Making waves in a mid-season shocking trade to Carolina from Colorado, the 28-year-old is off to a slower-than-expected start with the Hurricanes, registering two points in his first half-dozen outings. In 625 career games, Rantanen has lit the lamp on 288 occasions.

USA vs. Finland betting tip

Before the talking on the ice starts, our feeling is that out of the four participating nations in this mid-season contest, Finland is pegged as the most delicate team.

On paper comparing their blue-liners to the other three, there are some concerns in which whoever is starting in net for Finland, will have to steal a game for them rather than just managing the blue paint.

On the other hand, Team USA’s international experience at the senior level might be the only ailing situation that they will have to deal with on the big stage.

General Manager Bill Guerin has assembled from top to bottom the most balanced team in the tournament, and with this depth, they should get out of the gate running on Thursday.

USA’s forward group should wear down this lacklustre Finnish d-core on the forecheck while not giving the opposition much higher danger chances on their end.

Finland is usually a pesky side but that said, our feeling is that the Americans will show up and make a statement setting up for Saturday’s spectacle against Canada.
