WEBSTER SPRINGS, W.Va (WCHS) — Custard Stand Chili in Webster Springs is once again in the spotlight after it was featured in a Google Super Bowl commercial highlighting local businesses in all 50 states.
What started as a small business in Webster Springs by owners Angie and Dee Cowger, has been featured on Shark Tank, national grocery store shelves, and now, a Google ad.
“It just lets you know you can dream as big as you want to dream,” Angie Cowger said. “If we can get on a Super Bowl commercial from this little tiny town here in Webster Springs with one red light, anybody can get on a Super Bowl commercial.”
“I think things are just falling in place for us,” Dee Cowger said. “I think its fate and the good lord looking out for us, good things happen to good people.”
Being in a Super Bowl commercial is a major milestone for any business, but for Dee Cowger it was a dream come true.
“Dee had two dreams when we started out making hot dog chili,” Angie said.
“I wanted to be on a super bowl commercial or NASCAR,” Dee Cowger said.
“We’re only going to be on the Super Bowl commercial in West Virginia, but it’s still a Super Bowl commercial,” Angie said.
The proposal to be in a Super Bowl commercial came from an unsuspecting email that even Angie Cowger herself wasn’t positive about.
“It said we’re looking at doing this project that’s going to involve 50 states, its going to involve nationwide coverage, would you like to be a part of it,” Angie said. “Well we get that stuff all the time. So I sent it to the person we work with that screens pr stuff. And I said is this legit.”
The story of Custard Stand Chili has been packed full of memories and Cowger says that’s what may have caught the attention of Google.
“I think there were a couple of other West Virginia businesses that they were looking at, and they just liked our story,” Angie said. “They liked the fact that we’ve been around a long time, that we developed from a restaurant and that we were working with national retailers for the chili sales at Custard Stand Food Products.”
