San Roque to host Cairns Cup in 2026

Must read

The Cairns Cup, disability golf’s premier matchplay event, is set to return in 2026 at the prestigious San Roque Club in Spain.

Founded by Englishmen Kevin Booth and Ian Halliwell in 2020, and first played in 2022, this biennial competition has rapidly become a symbol of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and inclusivity in the world of adaptive golf.

What started as an idea during the 2018 Phoenix Cup at Rotunda Golf Club, Florida, has grown into a major international event. That year, Kevin and Ian — both passionate advocates for disability golf — witnessed the power of the game to unite players from different backgrounds.

However, the tournament was overshadowed by tragedy when their dear friend, Billy Cairns from Kilmarnock, passed away the day before the event. Determined to honour Billy’s legacy, the duo set their sights on creating something truly special: a Ryder Cup-style matchplay event exclusively for golfers with disabilities.

From the outset, they aimed high, initially securing the 2010 Ryder Cup Course at Celtic Manor for the inaugural event in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to cancel not once, but twice. Undeterred, the first Cairns Cup was eventually played in May 2022 at The Shire London, where Team USA claimed a dominant victory with a 21-3 win over Team Europe.

The competition gained further momentum in 2024, when Cherry Creek Golf Club in Michigan hosted the second edition. This time, the contest was far more competitive, with Team USA narrowly edging out a one-point victory. Thanks to the overwhelming support of sponsors and donors, the event continues to be financially accessible, ensuring that players are selected based on ability and merit rather than financial means.

Looking ahead to 2026, the tournament moves to The San Roque Club in Spain, a stunning venue that has hosted elite events, including the European Tour’s Spanish Open. The teams will be captained by Kris Aves (Europe) and Greg Hooper (USA), two highly respected figures in adaptive golf.

“This event is about so much more than just golf,” said co-founder Kevin Booth. “It’s about giving every player, regardless of their financial situation, the chance to compete at the highest level, forming lifelong friendships, and proving that disability is no barrier to sporting excellence.”
