Must read

The Inn of Sheboygan closed in December, according to a restaurant staff member.

SHEBOYGAN – Business closings, an incoming department store and Sheboygan company expansion were among stories you might’ve missed in January.

Business expansions and housing developments were among major projects to expect across municipalities this year, economic leaders shared at the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce Economic Outlook meeting Jan. 16. Some include groundbreaking on a LongHorn Steakhouse, the completion of 54 homes in the Founders’ Pointe neighborhood and progress on affordable housing project Gateway Apartments.

Here are updates on additional projects.

Fountain Park restaurant expected to close soon

The restaurant is expected to close by the end of February and the Inn of Sheboygan has already closed its doors in preparation for the city’s future use.

The property and a nearby vacant lot were bought from I&Z Properties LLC for $3.2 million.

City Administrator Casey Bradley said possibilities for the downtown space could be brought to the Common Council in a few months.

“Overall, the plan will seek to (complement) the area and have mixed use incorporated that will (complement) downtown amenities,” he said in an email.

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet opening soon

The department store is planning a grand opening Feb. 12 in the new Memorial Plaza storefront, 3426 Kohler Memorial Drive. It will replace the former Big Lots.

Evident from its “Get Good Stuff Cheap” slogan, Ollie’s sells “real brands at real bargain prices” across more than a dozen departments, like bed, bath and home decor, and toys and games.

Old Wisconsin expanding operations in former Johnsonville facility

Old Wisconsin will be poised for future operational growth and 200 potential new hires with the acquisition of the former Johnsonville facility on Crocker Avenue.

Chuck Pfrang, vice president of plant operations at Old Wisconsin, said the building could be used in the summer. The company plans to expand product manufacturing and packaging from its other plants after renovations. He said it’ll be a phased project.

Nemschoff Chairs plant sold

The former Nemschoff Chairs plant was bought by SACO AEI Polymers’ parent company AESSE Investments for $7 million. MillerKnoll ceased operations in Sheboygan in fall 2023. 161 employees were laid off as a result.
